Apocynum, commonly known as Dogbane and Indian Hemp, is a genus of the plant family of the Apocynaceae with seven species. From the Greek: apo, away; cyno, dog, attributed to its toxicity (see Uses section). Apocynum venetum L. (Apocynaceae, Luobuma ) has a long history as a Chinese traditional medicine with uses to calm the liver, soothe the nerves, dissipate heat, and promote diuresis. An analysis using HPLC-MS revealed that an extract from dried leaves of Apocynum venetum L. contained more than 15 kinds of phenolic constituents. Two malonated flavonol glycosides were further isolated, and their structures were determined to be quercetin 3-O-(6''-O-malonyl)-beta-D-glucoside (1) and quercetin 3-O-(6''-O-malonyl)-beta-D-galactoside (2) by NMR spectroscopic analysis.
Chemical constituents of flavonoids from Apocynum venetum, The five compounds were identified to be trifolin (I), hyperroside (III), hyperin (V), isoquercetin-6'-o-acetate (VII) and isoquercetin (VIII).
