Studies of herbarium specimens led to the following identifications of 8 specimens referred to as Strychnos gauthierana Pierre ex Dop (= S. pierriana Hill), 3 were authentic and 1 was chosen as lectotype; 4 were identified as S. aenea Hill; and the 8th, considered by Hill to be a distinct sp., is reduced to S. ignatii Berg. A key is presented for 4 Strychnos spp.
