Biological Activity
Description: Gardenolic acid B shows promising hepatoprotective effects on nitrofurantoin-induced cytotoxicity in human liver-derived Hep G2 cells. Gardenolic acid B shows significant effects on terminating early pregnancy in rats.

Cycloartane triterpenoids from Kleinhovia hospita.[Pubmed: 19489592 ]

METHODS AND RESULTS:
Four new cycloartane triterpenoids, together with the known Gardenolic acid B, were isolated from Kleinhovia hospita. The triterpenoids (1-3) contain a unique 21,23-diacetal side-chain, while compound 4 contains two alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone moieties. Their structures and relative configurations were determined by spectroscopic methods, including 2D NMR and IR.
CONCLUSIONS:
These compounds showed promising hepatoprotective effects on nitrofurantoin-induced cytotoxicity in human liver-derived Hep G2 cells.
Gardenolic acid B Description
Source: The flowers of Gardenia jasminoides ellis.
Solvent: Chloroform, Dichloromethane, Ethyl Acetate, DMSO, Acetone, etc.
Storage: Providing storage is as stated on the product vial and the vial is kept tightly sealed, the product can be stored for up to 24 months(2-8C).

Wherever possible, you should prepare and use solutions on the same day. However, if you need to make up stock solutions in advance, we recommend that you store the solution as aliquots in tightly sealed vials at -20C. Generally, these will be useable for up to two weeks. Before use, and prior to opening the vial we recommend that you allow your product to equilibrate to room temperature for at least 1 hour.

Studies on the chemical constituents of antifertility plant gardenia jasminoides ellis I: The structure of gardenoic acid B, and early pregnancy terminating component.[Reference: WebLink]
The flowers of G. jasminoides are used in Chinese folk medicine for birth control. EtOAc extract of the flowers showed significant effects on terminating early pregnancy in rats.
METHODS AND RESULTS:
Flash column chromatog. separation of the crude extract gave several components among which 2 new cycloartane triterpenoids, namely gardenic acid and Gardenolic acid B (I) were active components. The structure of I, m.p. 214-216℃, [a]D17 + 51.2, C30H46O5, were deduced by spectral analyses on the acid and the diacetate II.
